The term is used to describe personal, geopolitical, and commercial relationships both among individuals and groups or institutions. The word has appeared in print as early as 1953.

友敌(frenemy，有时也拼做frienemy)，是friend(朋友)和enemy(敌人)两个词组合而成的，指伪装成朋友的敌人或者互相竞争的同伴。这个词1953年就已经出现，用来指代个人及群体组织之间的人际关系、地缘政治关系以及商业关系。

For example:

Zack is John's frenemy. They get along in the office but both of them work on internal competing teams.

扎克和约翰是友敌。他们在办公室相处得不错，同时又在团队内部相互竞争。
