反义交错式成语例析
反义交错式的成语，由互相矛盾或互相反对的两个方面的概念组成，使成语的两个部 分形成鲜明的对照。这类表达在汉语中也有不少，如汉语成语中就有转危为安、反败为胜、以少胜多、避重就轻、改邪归正、口是心非、眼高手低、贪生怕死、因小失大、貌合神离等等。下面是英语中一些比较常见的例子：
■blow hot and cold 摇摆不定，优柔寡断
He blows hot and cold about getting married. 他对结婚犹豫不决。
注：hot and cold的本义是“冷热”。如：
We serve hot and cold lunches. 我处供应冷热午餐。
Hot and cold are opposites. 热和冷是一对反义词。
All our rooms have hot and cold running water ie from taps. 我们所有的房间都有冷热自来水。
■first and last 总的说来，考虑到一切因素，完全地
He was a real gentleman, first and last. 从各方面来看，他都是个正人君子。
First and last, I had a happy childhood. 总的来说，我有过幸福的童年。
■give and take 相互容让，互相迁就
For a marriage to succeed, both partners must learn to give and take. 要使婚姻美满，双方必须懂得互相迁就。
If the dispute is to be resolved there must be some give and take. 若要争执获得解决，双方就要互相让步。
注：give-and-take可用作形容词。如：
Marriage is a give-and-take affair. 婚姻是互谅互让的事
■go through fire and water 赴汤蹈火
注：fire and water的本义是“水火”。如：
Fire and water do not agree. 水火不相容。
■move heaven and earth 竭尽全力，全力以赴
He’ll move heaven and earth to get it done on time. 他竭尽全力把它按时完成了。
■play fast and loose 反复无常
Stop playing fast and loose with that girl’s feelings can’t you see you’re upsetting her? 别玩弄那姑娘的感情——难道没看到你已经把她弄得心烦意乱了吗?
■through thick and thin 不顾艰难
We stood together through thick and thin. 他们患难与共。
He remained loyal to me through thick and thin. 他历尽艰辛始终都忠实于我。
They remained friends through thick and thin. 他们在任何情况下都是好朋友。
■up and down 上下
move up and down repeatedly 不停地上下动
He danced the baby up and down on his knee. 他把婴儿放在膝上颠着玩。
We’ve spent all day humping furniture up and down stairs. 我们花了一整天的时间楼上楼下地搬运家具。
The child bounced up and down on the bed. 那孩子在床上蹦蹦跳跳(from www.yywords.com)。
I didn’t like the way he looked me up and down before speaking to me. 我不喜欢他在跟我说话之前那样上下打量我。
■weal and woe 祸福
We must share weal and woe. 我们必须同甘共苦。
They lived in weal and woe. 他们同甘苦共患难。
